I love New Years! We start with a big party to celebrate its arrival. You get together with family and friends and eat a bunch of fun food. At the stroke of midnight everyone cheers and you kiss your loved ones.
But I think the best thing about the New Year is that it’s a good time to stop and reflect on where you’ve been and where you want to head. This is a very important thing to do. Every year I set new goals for the New Year. Do I always reach them? No. Do I sometimes reach them? Yes. But the most important part of setting goals is realizing where you need to go and building a plan to get there.
When I set my goals (New Year’s Resolution) I try to hear from God and to actually assess what I need to do. I try to set the goals in a way that is measurable (ie: not get in shape but work out three times a week) and obtainable (stretch me but be possible – ie: read 25 books vs. read 1000 books).
So I would like to hear from you. What are some of your goals for 2012?
I could say an easy answer like lose weight and forget it but I want something more this year. I want to get closer to the Lord doing practical things every day. I would like to be aware of what I’m saying before I say it so I can be a positive example of how a Christian should be more consistently. Even the little remarks can leave a bad impression. I also have a goal of becoming more involved at the Vineyard and community outreaches. The Lord has given me the place to accomplish this already it is now my job to see it through. Yes, the Lord can help me with these goals but I purposely chose things that took effort of my own. I need to DO not just ask.
Good point Pam. To reach good goals, we will need to ask God for help BUT we also have to put in our own effort. It will take us stepping into new situations to grow into new places. I like your goals.
Since I have been on a self improvement mode for the past 5 years, I added complaining and being more grateful, for my resolutions this year. The reason of course is that I am begining to notice those who complain and how they get me to do the same…it can start with the weather, or money and etc.
We all know how to complain, but I need to learn to be more grateful for the things in my life that work everyday, after day, after day. So far its the 2nd and I have complained at least once if not more everyday. …I pray to God to give me eyes that see how good life really is. (hoping that this is the right kind of prayer to ask for) …I need help and God seems to find a way to make me notice something, even when I am not looking. I will suddenly see a book on a shelf that has the right subject. I have even experience God putting something in my way, maybe to slow me down. I believe these are also messages and ways to help us from God.
Lost 280 lbs in 2 yrs so weight loss is not on the list this year LOL Got a Kindle Fire and found an app to read the Bible in 1 year. So far finished 8 days and want to complete this goal big time. Have tried reading it through many times, but just like the old diets, didn’t see it through.
I did it two years ago and it was very cool. Press ahead!
I found long ago that dieting, etc., just wasn’t something I would follow through on. Good intentions, etc. Now I am really feeling a need to do something that means something. I am a retired senior with plenty of time on my hands. And I am saying that if there is any way you can use me to help the church, the community, etc., I am open for discussion.
Hey Judy….There are lots of ways you can help out in the office. And we will be starting a tuturing program in a city school with 3rd graders in Febuary.
Great news to hear, John. I’m excited about the tutoring, tho I do not have any experience in teaching, but I am willing to learn!
I’d like to volunteer with the Facebook page. I could post upcoming events, sermons, church needs, etc.
thanks for the offer but we have someone on top of it now
I started last year with a resolution to memorize more scripture. Unfortunately I didn’t have a great plan in place so it eventually fell apart. This year I am hoping to memorize one scripture per month. And then maybe more next year.
